Our History Buff Says:

Stroll down six miles of fine shopping, galleries, and dining on historic Magazine Street in New Orleans! You'll encounter antiques, furniture, jewelry, and great restaurants as you travel from the French Quarter to the Audubon Park—and you'll get a great workout along the way!

Located just minutes from downtown New Orleans, Magazine Street is named for a famous warehouse, "a magazine", from the 1780s that housed products for export. At the time, Spain and France had a trade agreement, thus bringing trade to the then Spanish New Orleans, putting New Orleans on the map as a major international port. An alternate story that dates back to colonial times has the name originating from an ammunition magazine located on the street.

Today, this vibrant street showcases a history of architectural variety, from the mid-19th century Greek Revival style, to the colorful Victorian cottages, to the more modern buildings and shops. The narrow street follows the curvature of the Mississippi River and gives tourists a great tour through Uptown New Orleans. Bohemians flock Magazine Street for the stylish thrift stores and coffee shops; scholars for the book stores, historians for the architecture and history, and all other tourists for the fantastic selection of antiques and restaurants.

Since Hurricane Katrina, Magazine Street has gained increased popularity. Visiting this historic streets brings business to local business owners and adds to an increase in state nationalism and pride—there's no wonder why Magazine Street has become known by locals as the "Street of Dreams"!
