Our Sports Superfan Says:
One of the most important stadiums in the landscape of college football, Ladd Peebles Stadium is the major outdoor venue of Mobile, Alabama. It is home to college football's GMAC Bowl and the Senior Bowl all-star game. Starting in 2009, it is slated to become the new home of the University of South Alabama football team.
Ladd Peebles Stadium was built in 1948, and has since hosted many high school, college, and professional football exhibition and regular season games. The Senior Bowl, a postseason all-star game for college seniors, has been played here since 1951, putting Mobile on the map, at least for pro scouts and front office officials.
When the stadium was renovated in 1997 for $8.1 million (being endowed at the same time with the Peebles name), it was brought it in line with the more modern major football venues. The GMAC Bowl was inaugurated in 1999, and in 2001, was one of the wildest games in the history of college football. Now-NFL quarterback Byron Leftwich's Marshall team was trailing East Carolina 38-8, before mounting a ferocious rally and winning 64-61 in double overtime in one of the highest-scoring, and biggest comeback, games in college football history.
In addition to football, Ladd Peebles Stadium has also hosted boxing matches, big name concerts, and major local events such as graduations and trade shows. Holding up to 50,000 people, the stadium has welcomed both the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley, just to name a couple of major figures.
Ladd Peebles Stadium is located in downtown Mobile.
