The number one attraction in New Orleans is the Louisiana State Museum. Thousands of art pieces and artifacts bring to life Louisiana's historic cultural diversity and legacy. The museum Complex operates five properties including the Cabildo, Presbytere, 1850 House, Old U.S. Mint and Madame John's Legacy. Visitors also have a chance to visit the Old Courthouse in Natchitoches, and the E.D. White Historic Site in Thibodaux.
You'll find a fascinating exhibit on gold as you explore the natural beauty and scientific value this precious metal had on shaping world history. The museum also houses hundreds of geological specimens and cultural objects including fine jewelry and artifacts from ancient civilizations to the Gold Rush we all know and get excited about.
The exhibits entitled Grounds for Greatness: Louisiana and the Nation, and Experiencing Louisiana: Discovering the Soul of America, focus on the state's reputation as a Sportman's Paradise and its Mardi Gras traditions. You'll find a 48 foot wooden shrimp trawler, a Civil War submarine, a record breaking Marlin, a Krewe of lawnmowers, a New Orleans Lucky Dog cart and musical artifacts from Fats Domino, Buddy Guy, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Aaron Neville and more. You'll also find costumes, jazz history, and many visual arts.
To reach the Louisiana State Museum, exit the I-110 onto Capitol Lake Rd. Make a left onto N 3rd St. followed by a left on Spanish Town Rd. Watch out for an immediate right onto N 4th St where you'll find the museum.
This historic district and museum promises a wonderful day.
