Located in the Warehouse District, the Contemporary Arts Center is a museum that focuses on new developments in painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, performance art and new media, and is best known for its changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Founded in 1939 as the Modern Art Society, the Contemporary Arts Center has no permanent exhibits, but does offer up to 250 rotating temporary exhibitions, as well as classes, lectures, screenings, and concerts every year in over 1000 square feet of gallery space, two theaters, a rehearsal hall, and an arts lab.
The Contemporary Arts Center has displayed the works of many now-famous artists early in their careers, including Andy Warhol, and hosts film and video screenings in conjunction with the New Orleans Film Festival. Music lovers - don't miss the local and national music acts, ranging from jazz to African drumming to Latin drumming, showcased a few times a month. Everyone will enjoy the plays, monthly staged readings and critiques at the Playwrights' Unit Staged Reading Series, and the yearly New Play Competition, which is open to regional writers.
To get to the Contemporary Arts Center from I-75/I-71: Take 1-75 North across Brent Spence Bridge. Stay in right lane. Take the 5th Street Exit. Take 5th Street to Vine Street. Turn Left on Vine. Take Vine Street to 7th Street. Turn right on 7th Street. Take 7th to Walnut Street. Turn right on Walnut. CAC is on the corner of 6th and Walnut.
