Our History Buff Says:

Visit the oldest civilized settlement on the Mississippi River! From the magnificent antebellum estate of John McMurran, to the downtown home of African-American barber and diarist William Johnson, to the cypress swamp and pillared portico of the Melrose mansion, Natchez National Historical Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the amazing antebellum South in an environment well-suited for the whole family!

Downtown Natchez, with its unique historic Antebellum Houses, is an architectural phenomenon definitely worth checking out. Visitors to Natchez will love the beautiful St. Mary's Basilica, built in 1841—step inside for a view of architectural beauty and spiritual history. There's also Trinity Episcopal Church built in 1822, which boasts two rare art-glass windows designed and installed by the famous Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Natchez Museum of Afro-American History and Culture in the old post office tells of African American life in Natchez from the end of the Civil War through World War II, and the Stratton Chapel Gallery in the First Presbyterian Church has nearly 100 years of Natchez history captured in photos for visitors to peruse. If you're looking for more outdoorsy activities, the Melrose Visitor Center has great maps and information on exploring the historic outbuildings, birdwatching, and relaxing in the formal gardens. And while you're at Natchez National Historical Park, don't miss the guided 45 minute tour of the Melrose mansion house, offered every hour beginning at 9:00 a.m. A great option when you're ready to break from the great outdoors!

To get to Natchez National Historical Park from Jackson, Mississippi, take Highway 84 west to Highway 61. Go south towards Natchez and make a right on Melrose/Montebello Parkway. The park will be one mile ahead on your right. Bring the family out to Natchez for a historical, spiritual, educational, and FUN time!
