Things to do / Travel Guide
You'll find some of the most exciting, challenging, and scenic golf in the United States right along the Gulf Coast, in the southern Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama region. Talk about Southern hospitality!
Golf in Southern Alabama and Mississippi
Take Kiva Dunes. In the past, this course was deemed the second “Best New Public Course” in America by Golf Digest. Also nicknamed the “Evil Mistress of the Gulf,” you'll find natural shrubbery, water and wind heightens - and changes - the challenge on a daily basis.
Just to the west, and over the border in Mississippi, is Shell Landing, a beautiful golf resort in the past named one of “America's Best New Courses” by Golf Digest. This scenic golf course boasts pines, marshes, bayous, wetlands, and rolling hills. You'll enjoy them all at this plush resort that includes golf carts equipped with GPS systems.
The Grand Bear golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus (of course), is billed as the most spectacular in the entire South. Be prepared to enjoy natural cypress wetlands and secluded fairways.
Golf in Southern Louisiana
The relatively flat landscape on which TPC of Louisiana was built has been molded and shaped into undulating fairways lined by massive trees. Water and sand bunkers fill out the design to make this a challenging test for any golfer.
Former PGA champion David Toms designed Carter Plantation, a golf course that Golf Magazine has recognized as one of the “Top 10 Courses You Can Play.” The course takes golfers through live oak flats, cypress wetlands, and upland pine forests - all environments unique to the state of Louisiana
Finally, for only the most confident and skilled golfers, there's The Bluffs on Thompson Creek Course. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the challenge lies in the many elevation changes and multi-tiered greens.
So you see, the South remains as beautiful as ever, but it just isn't as genteel as it used to be. At least not when it comes to playing golf.
