Flying to New Orleans, Louisiana
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is by far the best served airport in the region. Major US airlines offer non-stop service from MSY to most main United States destinations. The only international service is to Toronto, which does not really seem so international.
If you are headed closer to Mobile, Biloxi, Natchez or Baton Rouge it may be more convenient to fly into Gulfport Municipal Airport (GPT), Jackson International Airport (JAN), Ryan Airport (BTR) or even Pensacola (PNS) in the nearby Florida Panhandle. Bear in mind that these airports are service mainly by commuter airlines with service mainly to Texas and the Southeastern States.
Driving Distance to New Orleans
New Orleans is located on I-10, the nation's southernmost cross-country interstate highway and near I-55, heading north directly to Chicago.
- Driving Distance from Houston, Texas to New Orleans: 349 miles, 5 hours 45 minutes
- Driving Distance from Memphis, Tennessee to New Orleans: 396 miles, 6 hours 15 minutes
- Driving Distance from Orlando, Florida to New Orleans: 638 miles, 10 hours 15 minutes
- Driving Distance from Atlanta to New Orleans: 468 miles, 7 hours 30 minutes
Train from New Orleans to Biloxi and Mobile
Unfortunately, Amtrak has not yet recovered from Katrina. The Sunset Limited route was the southernmost cross-country route in the United States, running from California to Florida. Since Katrina, and mainly due to administrative issues, the train goes no further east than New Orleans. So, there is no train service between New Orleans and Biloxi, Mississippi and Mobile, Alabama.
Heading west to Texas and beyond, the Sunset Limited serves Houston, San Antonio in nearby Texas with a travel time of 9 and 15 hours, respectively. Further west, the trip to Los Angeles takes almost two full days. Expect to see a whole lot of Texas.
Heading north towards Chicago, the City of New Orleans route arrives in Memphis, Tennessee in 9 hours and makes it all the way to Chicago in a reasonable 19 hours. Leave Chicago in the evening and arrive in New Orleans the following afternoon. Plan for some delays, though.
