Our Sports Superfan Says:
Texans take two things seriously: their prison system and their football. This is especially true of college football, which is like a religion in the Lone Star State. At John O'Quinn Field at Corbin J. Robertson Stadium, you'll see the scarlet and white Houston Cougars hit the gridiron, with their mascot Shasta the Cougar dancing on the sidelines. Robertson Stadium is located on the campus of the University of Houston and has a maximum seating capacity of 32,000 fans. Additionally, the stadium hosts home games for the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer, who began playing in the 2006 season. The stadium also hosted the Houston Oilers during the first five years of their existence, from 1960 to 1964.
The University of Houston ("UH") played its home football games here from 1946 to 1950, before moving to Rice Stadium in 1951, and then to the Astrodome in 1965. Over the years, the stadium has experienced several additions. The stadium was renamed Jeppesen Stadium in 1958, and in 1970 the University of Houston bought the stadium and renamed it Robertson Stadium, after University of Houston Board of Regents member and athletics committee chairman Corbin Robertson. Beginning in 1993, the Cougars moved back to Robertson Stadium and began splitting their home games between the Astrodome and Robertson Stadium. When the lease agreement with the Astrodome ended prior to the 1998 season, the Cougars moved the entire home slate of games back to Robertston Stadium. The stadium was heavily renovated in 1999, to bring it up to NCAA Division 1-A standards for football venues. The playing surface was lowered nine feet, and the running track eliminated, to facilitate the addition of new seating on the sidelines and end zones. The playing field itself was named in honor of Houston attorney John O'Quinn, a donor to the project, thus modifying its official name to John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. Several improvements were made in 2006 thanks to a donation from the Houston Dynamo. The lighting system was upgraded, and a new scoreboard and video screen were added. This was completed in August 2006, despite the fact that the Houston Dynamo plan to vacate the stadium for a new soccer specific stadium within the next three years. More recently, long-rumored plans of an endzone facility, including locker rooms, offices, retail space, and luxury boxes, have progressed to the fundraising stage. In April 2007, preliminary renderings of the new facility were displayed to high level Cougar Pride members. Planning appears to be in the very late stages, and an official announcement should come soon.
The largest attendance for a single game at Robertson Stadium was recorded on December 1, 2006, when 31,818 people watched the "Coogs" cruise to their first Conference USA Football crown in 10 years, defeating the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles 34-20.
Before each Cougar game, make sure to check out the Tailgate Village. Tailgate Village is located on the Scott Street side of Robertson Stadium, and has live entertainment, children's activities, and a UH Marching Band performance. You will also be near the UH "Victory Walk" when the team enters the stadium prior to the game.
Robertson Stadium is located on the campus of the University of Houston, off either Cullen Boulevard or Scott Street, between Holman and Wheeler. Fans planning to visit Robertson Stadium are advised to enter the campus through Cullen Boulevard or Scott Street off of I-45. There are various parking lots scattered around the stadium grounds.
