Our Sports Superfan Says:
When betting on horses was legalized in Texas in 1987, plans for building several race tracks began. It took a few years, but Retama Park finally opened in 1995, featuring racing from September through November each year. The track hosts thoroughbreds Thursday-Saturday during the meet, with simulcasting every day throughout the year.
The biggest purses at Retama each year are in the middle of October, with the $125,000 My Dandy Texas Stallion Stakes for the two-year-old male horses, and Darby's Daughter Texas Stallion Stakes for two-year-old fillies.
Aside from the bar and grill at the race book, there is also the Turf and Field Club, which features a more formal environment for dining and lounging, and which is available for private rentals.
Retama Park is located in Selma, Texas, about 20 miles northeast of San Antonio.
