Padre Island National Seashore, on the north shore of Padre Island, is the world's longest remaining undeveloped stretch of barrier island. Five of the world's seven sea turtle species call the island home, all of them threatened or endangered. Padre Island is also one of the few places the public can go to see adorable, tiny sea turtle hatchlings being released into the wild.
Fishing is famous along the island and immensely popular. Perfect wind conditions make the Bird Island Basin area on Laguna Madre one of the most exciting places in the country for windsurfers. Biking and touring the island on foot are also popular activities. Visitors should be aware that many less-than-friendly animals live on or near the island (scorpions, snakes, and sharks, to name a few).
From Padre Island National Seashore - Texas:
Padre Island National Seashore, encompassing 130,434 acres, is the longest remaining undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world, and offers a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as recreation. Our major attractions are fishing, camping, and windsurfing. Our Bird Island Basin area on the Laguna Madre is one of the top spots in the nation for windsurfing because of its steady wind, warm water, and shallow depths.
