Our Museum Expert Says:

Visit a haven of Impressionist, Baroque, Renaissance and African tribal art! The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, home to more than 56,000 works of art, will enlighten its visitors with the visual arts, globalizing and broadening horizons.

The largest art museum in America south of Chicago, west of Washington, D.C., and east of Los Angeles, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston is home to works of art that reflect a wide variety of geographic regions, dating from antiquity to the present. The museum opened in 1924 and was the first art museum in Texas.

Today, highlights include the Beck Collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Art, featuring creations by Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse and Paul Gaugin. Other cool features here are the sculpture garden and the teaching wing, where the works of students and top Texan artists are on display. There is ample Pre-Columbian gold, and the European and American paintings and sculpture from post-1945 are particularly popular here. Kids will love the masks, figures, hats, and knives in the museum's African collection from Nigeria´s early Nok culture which spans some 2,500 years. When you're ready for a pick-me-up, drop by the Cafe Express, for a leisurely lunch, an afternoon snack, or a light dinner.

The Museum of Fine Arts is located at 1001 Bissonnet Street, and the METRO's Light Rail Museum District stop is conveniently located between the Audrey Jones Beck Building and the Visitors Center. So put on your most comfortable shoes and get ready for an art-filled day you won't soon forget!
