Our Museum Expert Says:

The Buffalo Soldier Museum, founded in 2000, preserves the legacy and honor of the African-American soldier (nicknamed Buffalo Soldiers), and does so with pride, diligence, and admiration. At the museum you will learn the history of America's African-American army units that have been successfully contributing to American war history for the past 200 years.

The museum houses a unique collection of historical artifacts, documents, prints, videos, and other memorabilia, relating to the African-American units that were formed in 1866 by the U.S. Army. The units were identified as the 9th and 10th cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st infantry regiments. The four infantry regiments were later reorganized to form the 24th and 25th infantry regiments.

Buffalo Soldiers were assigned the most difficult tasks in the late 1800s, that included subduing Mexican revolutionaries, outlaws, and hostile Native Americans. They were responsible for mapping the Southwest and establishing outposts for future towns. These brave and courageous men fought in the Indian Wars of the North American West, Spanish American War of 1898, World War I and World War II.

The museum's fun and interactive displays make full use of multi-media technologies that enhance the legacy of these brave Buffalo Soldiers.

The Buffalo Soldier Museum's store is filled with caps, CDs, calendars, jackets, literature, prints, t-shirts, and other fine souvenirs.

The Buffalo Soldiers Museum is in the Historic 3rd War Museum District. From the I-10, exit south onto I-45 and merge south again onto Eastex Fwy (US Route 59). Bear left onto 288 and exit right onto Southmore Boulevard.
