Learn the full story of our 36th President beginning with his ancestors until his final days at LBJ Ranch! The Lyndon B. Johnson Historical Park gives a unique perspective into one of America's most noteworthy citizens, providing a complete picture of the president. This is a learning experience not to be missed!
The Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park includes 2 separate visitor areas: Johnson City and the LBJ Ranch/LBJ State Park and Historic Site, which are about a 20 minute drive apart from each other. Visitors to the ranch portion of the Park can see LBJ's boyhood home and the sprawling ranch that became known as the Texas White House. Tour buses depart regularly to the ranch from the state park visitor center, which displays interesting memorabilia from Johnson's boyhood ranch. A reconstruction of the former president's birthplace lies close to his final resting place, which is shared with five generations of Johnsons. Visit the Living History Farm to see what Johnson would have seen on his own farm on a regular basis. There are even period-costumed "occupants" who'll give you a genuine feel of what life was like on a typical Texas-German farm at the turn of the century. Kids will love visiting with the free roaming pigs, turkeys, chickens and other animals. There are also nature trails, a swimming pool and lots of picnic spots nearby—and bring your pole if you want to fish in the nearby Pedernales River. Tours of the LBJ Ranch last from 1 to 1½ hours and depart from the state park visitor center daily.
14 miles farther east is Johnson City, an agricultural town named for founder James Polk Johnson, a cousin of LBJ. The centerpiece of this part of the National Historical Park is a modest white clapboard structure that the family occupied from 1913 and is where Lyndon was raised after age five. The rustic dogtrot cabin out of which they ran their business is still intact, too. The Visitors Center has a number of excellent interactive displays and two short films which provide background for the buildings you'll see here.
To get to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park from Austin, take Highway 290W and make a left at Johnson City toward Fredericksburg. Turn left on Avenue F (after three blocks) and then a right onto Ladybird Lane (after another two blocks). You'll see the parking lot and the visitor center on your left. Bring the family out to the family home of LBJ—you'll have a great time visiting his house, his grounds, and his lovely animals!
