Goliad gets its name by rearranging the name Hidalgo (minus the H), who was the chief leader of Mexico's war of independence from Spain. As its name suggests, this park is rich with history, and contains sites such as the beautiful Franciscan Mission Espiritu Santo, and the Presidio La Bahia. Goliad is situated within three ecological zones and the San Antonio River winds right through it, bringing with it great fishing and canoeing. Visitors will delight at the array of birds and plant life such as prickly pear cacti, mesquite, and thorny bushes, which populate the hiking trails of this historic park. With its iconic architecture and classic Texan terrain, Goliad State Park will enchant all who visit.
