Our Botanical Gardens Expert Says:
Become a part of a unique and moving story at the newly renovated Sunken Japanese Tea Gardens in San Antonio, Texas! Bring the family, some books, and a camera and spend the afternoon walking through an exotic garden that dates back nearly 100 years!
In 1915, the city of San Antonia hired Kimi Eizo Jingo, a Japanese immigrant, to transform an old rock quarry into a Japanese garden. His work and the work of his successors have spanned nearly a century now and is constantly being restored, updated, and made more elaborate and beautiful. What started as a simple lily pond and a rock house is now a large garden filled with lush vegetation, flowers, a pagoda, winding walkways, stone bridges, a 60 foot waterfall and tranquil pools filled with Koi.
The Sunken Japanese Tea Gardens is a particularly good place to wander around, meditate, and enjoy quality family fun! You may also catch a show or concert at the Sunken Garden amphitheater. You can also chill out by the Pagoda and visit the Jingu House, where Kimi Eizo Jingo lived with his family before being evicted during World War II.
Bring your camera and visit one of San Antonio's most popular attractions—a beautiful and unique place that will merit visit upon visit upon visit!
