The 34 miles of white sand beach and emerald blue waters of South Padre Island, earn it a spot among the best beaches in the United States. A bit of the tropics in Texas, the combination of entertainment, nature, activities and wildlife make South Padre Island a popular beach destination for a variety of vacationers.
College students have chosen South Padre Island for the wild parties, bars, surfing and bikini contests of Spring Break (3 weeks in March), mostly concentrated around Coca Cola beach. During the rest of the year, the area is popular with visitors from Texas, nearby Mexico and with "winter Texans" migrating from the colder states to the north.
The southern tip, 5 miles long, around the town of South Padre Island, is walkable, and trolley service is available till late at night. Further north, the island is less developed and quite tranquil. The locals are quite friendly and it's a great place to get away for a weekend or even a week.
