Pack up and get ready for a great weekend beach getaway right outside Houston! Known for its 32 miles of beautiful Gulf beaches, Galveston Beach has plenty of recreational activities to fill your day, week or year. Aside from miles and miles of wide and spacious beaches that are perfect for sunning, swimming and wading, Galveston Beach has got attractions in store to please everyone from the history buff to the nature lover and much more. If traveling with the whole family, your best bet for a memorable vacation is Stewart Beach Park, located at 6th and Seawall Boulevard. From volleyball tournaments and sandcastle competitions to summer concerts, there's plenty here to enjoy for everyone in the family. Or if you prefer, head over to Galveston's East Beach (also called R.A. Apffel Park), located at Seawall and Boddeker Drive, and take everyone exploring at Big Reef Nature Park to observe maritime critters. When you're ready for a break from the water, the outdoor pavilion has got a snack bar and gift shop plus a game room and volleyball courts so even antsy kids will be entertained for hours. If looking for a bit more flavor, the historic Strand area and Victorian mansions offer a great break from traditional "beachy" activities, or you can head to Seawolf Park, originally built on an immigration station site, and check out the World War II submarine, destroyer escort, and other military hardware. There's a pavilion with views of Galveston harbor too, plus picnic sites, a playground area and a fishing pier here. If you decide to spend the night, Galveston Island State Park is stocked with tables, barbecue pits, and water and electrical hook-ups on all sites to ensure a comfy and cozy camping experience. Be sure to leave some time to enjoy the great selection of restaurants at Galveston, as well, from pier and gulf-front dining to classic American pub food and craft-brewed beer.
