With the major cities of San Antonio and Houston located in southeast Texas, millions of residents in the region have a number of local professional teams to root for in three out of the four major sports. The NBA has a double presence in the region, with the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets, while the Houston Astros and Texans pack sports fans into the seats for Major League Baseball and NFL games, respectively. Interestingly, the term “AstroTurf” was born after the artificial grass-like material was laid as the playing field for the Astros in their former stadium, the Astrodome, in 1965.
College football, soccer, horseracing, and tennis are some of the other sports that can be taken in while visiting the region. And, naturally, rodeos are huge in this region! Four major rodeo events take place each year in southeast Texas: RodeoHouston, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo, and the Roundup Cowboy Gathering.
