Things to do / Travel Guide
The Gulf Of Mexico near the coast tends to get murky due to strong currents, but South Padre Island does have clear-enough water on its coast for the consideration of the amateur snorkeler. You can buy low-cost gear at gift shops along the beach.
You should be vigilant of the strong undertow, and the presence of the exotic blue Portuguese man-of-war. These are jellyfish that deliver very painful stings with their tentacles that can reach 20 feet under the water. Because of their odd and colorful appearance, kids may be attracted to them and want to play with them, so make sure to warn them beforehand.
