Resort and Lodging Guide

Unless in your choice of hotels you are looking for extreme luxury, you can find recognizable chains, like the Crowne Plaza or the Omni, in most city centers near sites of tourist interest. Rooms in these establishments typically cost from $120-$250 a night. While often walking distance from main attractions, securing a room for these prices along the Riverwalk or near the Alamo warrants at least a two month advance reservation.

Texas hotels on the north side of San Antonio near San Antonio International Airport, are along the main highways, and are cheaper, less likely to fill up, and convenient to wherever you might want to go. While these places to lodge are not as close to downtown San Antonio and sites like the Alamo, they are nearer to the tourist sites of Sea World, New Braunfels, and San Marcos.

As a general rule, the further you get from a city center, the cheaper accommodation gets. A room at a reputable motel chain can be had for less than $40 a night, but might require a decent drive. Moreover, if you are looking for something outside the normal hotel, southeast Texas has plenty of accommodations for a traveling family:

Historic Inns and Bed and Breakfasts (B&B)

The Texas Hill Country reigns supreme when it comes to alternative accommodations. There are more inns and B&Bs in these parts than anywhere else in the state. Some have some pretty posh amenities, like private fishing piers, spas, and Jacuzzis. Old-world charm dominates on account of the German and Czech ancestry of the area's inhabitants. Prices can range from as low as $60 in the off-season, to as much as $400 a day for the ritzier places in high season.

The Hill Country has several historic hotels and inns. One of the most famous is the Faust Hotel in New Braunfels. The Faust is a beautiful Spanish Revival structure, four stories, with a full-service steakhouse and microbrewery in the lobby.

If Victorian-style is more to your liking, Galveston Island is full of many B&Bs that would appeal to the most respectable of tastes. The 19th-century Victorian Bed & Breakfast Inn and The Mermaid and the Dolphin are some of the oldest inns in Texas, and offer traditional breakfasts and a charming and intimate atmosphere to soak up the salty Gulf air.

Ranches

For those who really want to get away from it all, there's the option of staying in a guest house on a ranch. A ranch getaway is a great way to soak up clean air and really rejuvenate the mind and body in a pleasant, pastoral atmosphere. One such option is the Way of The Wolf Spa and B&B. Located in Fredericksburg, at the heart of the Texas Hill Country, the Way of the Wolf is close to all the antique markets, wineries, steakhouses, and other points of interest to travelers. Another alternative is the nearby Paniolo Ranch, which also offers excellent accommodations for travelers. Both of these places offer the clear open skies and quiet of a ranch with the amenities of a full-service resort. These and others like them cost about $125 per person per night.

Beach Houses

The southeast Texas coast has other types of unique accommodation in addition to hotels and condos for those who are looking for easy access to the beach. In the Galveston area and in nearby Port Bolivar, there are many privately-owned beach houses lining the beach. Rentals can be by the week or even year-round, but these beach houses often fill up during holidays and the summer, so be sure to book well in advance.

A short walk away from the beach, Port Aransas on Mustang Island has all sorts of cottages and bungalows that are similar in design. These houses are pricier due to limited availability and their popularity during the summer months. Prices can run anywhere from $750 a week to over $2000 in the high season.
