Things to do / Travel Guide
The region of southeast Texas is formed within the triangle of Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. It is around these metropolitan areas that the major golf courses lie.
Golf in San Antonio
If it's the wonderful vistas of San Antonio you want, the La Cantera Golf Club is for you. You'll need to bring your “A” game though, because tens of bunkers, trees, and fast rolling greens are the order of the day on this difficult course.
The aptly named Quarry is a another challenging course, whose back nine pass through a tremendous rock quarry featuring sheer walls rising almost 100 feet on three of the four sides.
The Pecan Valley Golf Club, one of the oldest courses in the area, has recently undergone $5.5 million in improvements. All golfers will enjoy the experience at this course.
Golfweek Magazine named The Bandit the 5th Best Course in Texas. Why? Among the highlights are elevated tee boxes that the course management says are like hawks' nests that grant the golfer command of the situation.
Golf in Austin
Nearby in Austin is the Barton Creek luxury resort, which offers three courses from which to choose. The first is the Fazio Foothills Course known for its cliff-lined fairways, natural caves, and waterfalls. This gorgeous course has in the past been named one of Golf Magazine's 100 top courses in the United States.
Another course at Barton Creek is the Fazio Canyons Course, where you'll find tree-lined fairways and a limestone creek. The course is rugged and challenging - something for the more-skilled golfer to enjoy.
The third course at Barton Creek is the Crenshaw Cliffside Course. This is a links-style design with wide, undulating fairways. Native vegetation and natural plateaus are among the sights seen from the course.
The Horseshoe Bay Country Club - Ram Rock Course is nicknamed the “Challenger.” Narrow fairways, undulating greens, innumerable sand traps, water hazards, and dry creeks are just a few of the reasons for this nickname.
Golf in Houston
Houston offers great golf too. The Woodlands Oaks (TPC) Course sports a “plus size” Texas feel with its huge greens, huge bunkers, and broad fairways. The place is first class all the way, and you'll have to bring a hefty wallet to enjoy the privilege of playing it.
Nearby and newly upgraded is Memorial Park. This is a very affordable public course that features long fairways and big oak trees.
