Getting to Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Southeastern Texas

Things to do / Travel Guide

By Air

All the major cities in southeast Texas have international airports. International in this context basically means with service to Mexico and a few other relatively close places. San Antonio's is San Antonio International Airport (SAT), Austin's is Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), and Corpus Christi has Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP). Flights to Corpus Christi from most anywhere can cost considerably more and usually require a stop in Dallas or Houston. Houston, by far the biggest city in the region, has two airports: George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), a good way north of the city center, and the smaller William P.
Hobby Airport (HOU) in the southeast of the city proper. Most of the cheaper flights from outside the state can usually be found landing in the latter of these two airports.

By Car

Travel in the east-west direction will generally be on I-10. From the west, this highway enters from New Mexico and connects to San Antonio and farther east, Houston. From the east it connects southern Louisiana to Houston.

From the north, I-35 and I-45 come from Dallas. I-45 passes through Houston and ends at the coast in Galveston. I-35 passes through to Austin, then to San Antonio, and continues all the way to Laredo and the Mexican border.

U.S. Highway 37 connects San Antonio to Corpus Christi, and U.S. Highway 59 connects Houston through Corpus Christi, down to South Padre Island, and the Mexican border in Brownsville.

Below are driving times and distances between the major cities within the region and outside it:
  • Austin to San Antonio: 80 miles, about an hour drive
  • Austin and San Antonio to Houston: around 185 miles, about three hours driving
  • San Antonio to Corpus Christi: around 150 miles, about three hours
  • Houston and Austin to Corpus Christi: around 215 miles, about four hours
  • Houston to Dallas and New Orleans: around 250 miles, about 4.5 hours

By Bus/Train

Greyhound buses stop at just about every locale in southeast Texas, but don't expect to get to your final destination in the region quickly. With so many places to stop, it can take nearly double the time driving takes.

Amtrak has a station in San Antonio, with arrivals from St. Louis and Dallas, but to get most anywhere else requires transfer to a bus.
