Things to do / Travel Guide
Southeast Texas is famous for biking, mostly owing to a certain guy by the name of Lance Armstrong. Lance trains along the unique Veloway in Austin. This 3.1-mile paved route is closed to all traffic other than bicycles and inline skaters, so you can really go full blast. No joggers allowed.
While you will find bike trails all over the place, it is mountain biking that southeast Texas is best known for. Here are some of the most famous ones:
Flat Rock Ranch
Located in Comfort, Texas, Flat Rock Ranch is one of the best places to mountain bike in the nation. It is full of long, hard climbs and screaming-fast downhills. It is a well-designed track, maintained by a mountain biking club, and operating on a private ranch. The owners are nice folks, but you will have to be careful and respectful of the livestock. Probably not good for your bike to hit a cow. Also you will need to be careful about closing gates behind you that are designed to keep the cows penned in.
Barton Creek Greenbelt
Conveniently located in Austin, Barton Creek Greenbelt is the definitive mountain bike trail and is a popular escape from the city. It is not for the light-hearted or the out of shape, unless you intend to do some walking. The trail is full of trees and greenery to look at, as well as hard sharp rocks, ledges, and gravel. Proceed with caution.
Walnut Creek Trails
Also located in Austin, Walnut Creek Trails is a premier biking area. It is a tight single-track, full of creek crossings, jumps, and constant swoops. The climbs, however, are not bad. Although it isn't too expansive, the route is full of many twisting trails, and it isn't too hard to get lost.
Memorial Park
Memorial Park is right in the middle of Houston. The park is amazing, and it is also home to a brutal trail known to local mountain bikers as “Ho Chi Minh Trail,” due to its thorny, jungle-like environs. It is considered impossible when the ground is wet, so don't even try. When dry, it is an exhilarating course of zigzagging and shady track winding on for miles.
