Things to do / Travel Guide
Looking for adventure in southeast Texas? It isn't hard to find, as Texans are big fans of the outdoors, and whatever your outdoor pleasure is, you can probably find it here. Aggressive sports abound, such as rock climbing in Enchanted Rock State Park, hiking, or riding motorcycles in the windy back roads.
For starters, try the Texas Ski Ranch in New Braunfels. There you can climb artificial rock walls, skateboard in a 15,000-square-foot skate park, or ride wakeboards or skis in the facility's cable lake. There's also a motocross park, where you can rent a dirt bike (but only if you take a lesson).
Motorcycling
You can rent a Harley in San Antonio and get access to the Hill Country scenery and back roads. Feel the wind spraying your face as you ride the hills and pass through small German towns on your right and left.
Dude Ranches
Dude ranches are another outlet for adventure. Most allow whole families to visit, and have activities for everyone. A ranch provides a great alternative vacation, and allows you to escape the city in a very real way, by being up close and personal to real ranch life; you can handle horses and livestock and interact with real cowboys, doing what cowboys do.
Most of the older, more-reputable dude ranches are in the Hill Country near Bandera. Lodging is around $125 a night a person.
Jet Skiing
Alternatively, if you are interested in jet skiing in the Gulf of Mexico, rentals are available along the water in and around the Galveston, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, and South Padre Island areas. Hold on to your cowboy hats!
