Texas Family Vacation Ideas
There is no shortage of things in southeast Texas for children to enjoy, and there are several kid-themed adventures that leave enough time and energy for the adults to play, too.
Kids will be enthralled by all the region's ghost stories. Every old building, like Galveston's Victorian houses or the missions in San Antonio, has a ghost story, and the people who run these sites know how to keep children interested. Most of the guides have ghost stories of their own.
Animals are always exciting to kids, and you'll find plenty in this region. Even if you miss one of the zoos, there are plenty of armadillos, coyotes, deer, skunks, and exotic birds scurrying or flying around to capture kids' attention.
Here are a few suggestions:
Houston Family Vacation Spots
In the Houston metropolitan area, the absolute biggest kid-friendly attraction is the Johnson Space Center, home of NASA's Mission Control. Visitors can see the space program in action and tour exhibits of moon rocks, space suits, and space capsules from the actual program. Most kids get a real thrill out of seeing NASA's finest hard at work, and can be inspired by the over-the-top environment and the touch-and-feel exhibits aimed at the younger crowd.
If you have kids, Schlitterbahn is a must-see attraction. Schlitterbahn is a locally owned water theme park which uses real river water from the Comal River (no chlorine). It has a small-town intimate vibe, without the in-your-face commercial fanfare of most amusement parks. Also, unlike most amusement parks, meat and good local German-style beer are available throughout the park, often served at swim-up bars and while relaxing in giant hot tubs. So even if water slides and tubing aren't your cup of tea, parents can have fun on their own, while watching their kids slide down the monstrous slides. Schlitterbahn has been voted the best water park in the world for eight straight years.
San Antonio Family Vacation Ideas
Sea World San Antonio is actually four parks in one, spread over 250 acres. You can easily spend more than a day here in the show park, with over 25 shows, the rides and slides park, and the animal park.
South Padre Island Family Vacations
South Padre Island isn't just the nicest beach in southeast Texas. It's also home to a new ocean-themed Schlitterbahn park. While not as homey as the original, and chlorinated, it promises to be every bit as fun and as cleverly-designed to keep adults as excited as the kids. Nearby is Gladys Porter Zoo, a natural habitat zoo with acres and acres of drive-through exhibits featuring African, South American, and Asian animals that thrive in the hot Texas climate.
