Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:
Kennecott Alaska, an abandoned mining town, is now an historic landmark. Visitors to Kennecott can enjoy glacier hiking, ice climbing, fishing and touring the abandoned copper mill. Visitors can also hike to the abandoned Bonanza or Jumbo mines. Tour the McCarthy-Kennicott Museum where many pictures, documents, charts, maps and artifacts are on exhibit. A model of the Bonanza Mine is also on display in a box car next to the museum.
Spend the night in the nearby town of McCarthy, or for a true experience, spend the night with a Kennecott resident. Residents of this little town are known for providing visitors with accommodations, meals, touring around the area and more. Local sources of drinking water are nearby creeks that are properly marked so you don't confuse them for fishing waters.
Kennecott is now accessible by air via McCarthy, or by driving on the Edgerton Highway to the McCarthy Road, a gravel road. The McCarthy Road ends at the Kennicott River and a footbridge is available for pedestrian traffic to McCarthy. From McCarthy, it is 4.5 miles to Kennecott. If you don't want to walk, or you don't have a car, shuttles are available to drive you between towns.
