The extraordinary Badlands have a lot to offer…over 200,000 acres of stunning geological formations including the Badlands Wall, beautiful mixed grassland prairie, and a vast collection of plant and animal life. Additionally, the park is a major contributor to paleontological studies and boasts a human historical record dating back 11,000 years. You can check out the "Big Pig Dig," an exciting dig taking place in the park each summer.
The Cliff Shelf Nature Trail and Fossil Exhibit Trail are fun and easy trails showcasing some of the best the park has to offer: beautiful scenic views and spectacular fossil exhibits. On some of the longer trails, especially in the backcountry, you may spot a bison, mule deer, or even a bald eagle. The black-footed ferret, North America's most endangered land mammal, has been reintroduced into the park.
From Badlands National Park - Interior, South Dakota:
At first glance, the Badlands of South Dakota resemble a wasteland. But this rugged, spartan land is a geological and ecological wonder, supporting a wide spectrum of plants and wildlife.
