Things to do / Travel Guide
This South Dakota Badlands see some of the most changeable weather in the United States, as temperatures range from freezing in the winter to downright hot in the summer. Generally speaking, however, the conditions are relatively dry, with a rainy season lasting from April-September. Right at the end of the rainy season, in the fall months, is when this region sees its best weather. Often cloudless and sunny skies are filled with migrating birds in the fall months, when Mt. Rushmore is at its most picturesque.
Winters are windy and frigid with cold weather and blizzards often blowing in to the region in the form of Artic winds. And yet there are warm days in the winter as well, which can be attributed to the inflow of the Chinook winds from the west as well as the deflection of colder weather by the region's Black Hills. January, for example, is the coldest month of the year in this region, yet, in 1943, it was also the site of the world's fastest recorded rise in temperature; from -4 degrees to 45 degrees in just two minutes! Spring's cool, clear weather is typically marred by rainy conditions. They are followed by hot and windy summers, which also commonly feature thunderstorms. The sight of a tornado twisting and turning about is not an uncommon site in the summer either. Fall brings with it cooler, drier weather and clear skies.
