Outdoor Recreation in the Black Hills of South Dakota

Don't be put off by the word “hills”. It just reflects the modest ways of South Dakota (and some possible name confusion) – the Black Hills are higher than any mountains in the eastern part of the United States. The highest point, Harney Peak offers a challenging hike to the 7,242 foot summit. Some of the best rock climbing in the country is in the Black Hills, at Spearfish Canyon, Needles and in Mount Rushmore National Park.

The centennial trail covers the entire length of the black hills, with over 100 miles of hiking and biking through the wilderness.
Though semantically not a “Outdoor Sport”, various levels of spelunking are available in the two large cave systems - Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park, both in the South Dakota Black Hills.
