Catering mainly to family travelers, motels and campgrounds in the Black Hills of South Dakota outnumber Ritz Carlton's by more than 100 to 0. Although it will be hard finding a luxury hotel in Rapid City, South Dakota, there are definitely some upscale lodging options. Your best bet is finding an historic inn or bed and breakfast tucked away in a small town or deep in the forest. These tend to be quite small, with 10 or less rooms, but are spacious and luxuriously decorated.
Fine dining in South Dakota is easier to find than one might expect. Concentrate on Deadwood, with its casino clientele and historic settings. Jake's, partly owned by Kevin Kostner, seems to be the favorite of the upscale crowd. Rapid City has some fine restaurants, as well. Enjoy the elk and bison.
