Family Travel in the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota
After driving hundreds of miles to see Mount Rushmore, a family vacation better have some exciting attractions for kinds, and the South Dakota Badlands and the Black Hills definitely do.
While relatively low on the typical family friendly travel destinations, like big malls, wild theme parks and big zoos, this part of South Dakota more then makes up for that in the area of nature and wildlife. Make this the family vacation, where bison, elk and possibly prairie dogs are part of the photo album. Underground, kids will love a tour of a real gold mine and enjoy exploring some of the biggest caves in the United States, including Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park, both in the South Dakota Black Hills.

Besides impressing the kids with Mount Rushmore and the natural beauty of the Black Hills and the South Dakota Badlands, there are a few kitschy, yet very popular family focused spots in the region. You can't miss Wall Drug, with its talking dinosaur, 6 foot rabbit and family friendly café. Flintstones Bedrock City, near Custer, South Dakota will entertain younger kids. Guests in the Bedrock City Campground have free access.

There is no minimum age for daytime and evening casino entrance in South Dakota, making Deadwood the only place in the United States that you can gamble alongside your teenager, toddler or under-21 companion. While they can't actually pull the slots or double-down, they can stay at arms length and bring you luck. To each his/her own!
