American River - South Fork Whitewater Rafting

Things to do / Travel Guide

Expert White Water Rafting Review

Shoot the whitewater rapids of the American River's South Fork. Challenge the 21 miles of Class II-III rapids. More people raft this river than any other river west of the Rockies. These sections, Chili Bar and Gorge, pass through American River Parkway, and are located in El Dorado County, east of north Auburn, 1 mile from I-80 on Iowa Hill Rd.

Practical Info: Rafting season is open approximately from April to October, with whitewater rafting trips ranging in length from a day trip up to 2 days. Popular trips include the 9 mile Chili Bar section, and the 12 mile Gorge section. The river is suitable for paddle rafts, oar rafts, kayaks, and inflatable kayaks.

Useful Tips: Guides are optional, although permits may be required for private trips. Outfitters on the American River's South Fork offer trips suitable for families.

Expect to See: Beavers, coyotes, mountain lions, and black bears in an environment of wilderness, and mountains. The setting is historic, as well.
