Expert White Water Rafting Review

Experience the whitewater of the American River's North Fork. Shoot the 23 miles of Class III-IV+ rapids, with the newly opened "Giant Gap" and its 14 miles of Class V rapids. These sections, Chamberlain Falls and Giant Gap, pass through Auburn State Recreation Area, and are located in Placer County, southeast of Colfax, 6 miles from I-80 on Iowa Hill Rd.

Practical Info: Rafting season is open approximately from April to June, with whitewater rafting trips ranging in length from a day trip up to 2 days. Popular trips include the 9 mile Chamberlain Falls section, and the 14 mile Giant Gap section. The river is suitable for paddle rafts, oar rafts, kayaks, inflatable kayaks, and motorized rafts. Portage may be required.

Useful Tips: Guides are optional, although permits may be required for private trips, and whitewater experience is recommended.

Expect to See: Black bears, mountain lions, spotted owls, peregrine falcons, golden eagles, and deer in an environment of wilderness, canyons, and mountains.
