Lake Tahoe is known for more than just Tahoe Ski Mountain. For a visit to a smaller resort with the Tahoe personality, take a look at Diamond Peak. Located 255 miles from San Francisco, 135 miles from Sacramento and just 30 miles from Reno, this resort is conveniently located for you to ride the day away with fewer crowds and more time on the slopes.
There are 30 trails here which offer a range of skiing difficulty levels, along with tree and open glade skiing, so that all skill levels and types are accommodated here. Weather permitting, the season is open from December to late April. Plunge into over 655 acres of terrain covered with a mixture of pure and manmade snow. Take one of the 6 lifts, including a high speed quad, up to the Golden Eagle Bowl or Solitude Canyon for steep, chiseled drops and glade skiing suitable for advanced riders. You can start by accessing the "Freeway," a 2.5 mile beginner run which leads down to the bunny hill. This will stretch your muscles and get you away from the crowds for a bit.
Elevation reaches 8540 feet and the vertical drop is 1840 feet. Opening hours are from 9am to 4pm. You may purchase either a full pass or, if you're planning to arrive for some afternoon skiing, choose a half day pass which is good from 12:30pm onwards. Adult, Youth (13-17 years old), Child and Senior prices are all available. Children under the age of 6, and seniors over 80 years of age, ski and ride for free. There is an interchangeable parents pass so if Mom or Dad gets tired during the first half of the day, they can switch off and use the same pass to finish off the runs. Mini-passes allow you to choose how many days you'd like to ski and deduct them as you go along, making a multi-day trip easy on the wallet. Family ski and ride packages are available, as are adult ski and lunch specials.
Rentals are available in standard and demo packages. Top names such as Salomon, Rossignol, Atomic, and Volkl are on hand in men and women's sizes. Burton snowboards round out the selections. In conjunction with Burton snowboards, Diamond runs a Learn to Ride Center with lessons for all levels. Repair and retail shops are on site, with helmet rentals available on a first come, first served basis.
