Yosemite National Park is home to a resort which not only caters to alpine skiers but also dishes up some great backcountry trails all while taking in the some of the most beautiful scenery around called Badger Pass. The drive to get here is less than 2 hours away from Fresno, California and 1 hour drive from Yosemite Valley making Badger Pass easily accessible to all.
Open daily from 9am to 4pm, Badger Pass' season runs from Mid-December to early April. Both cross-country and alpine skiing are available. Average snowfall blankets the area with 300 inches a year. The elevation reaches 8000 feet and the vertical drop clocks in at 800 feet to match. Ten trails of varying levels of difficulty, all named after wildlife animals, are available, and are serviced by 5 lifts.
Snowboarders can rush into the 2 terrain parks, which are designated for both families and regular riders. In the family park, expect small to medium jumps, and rails and boxes to hone new skills in a non-competitive atmosphere. In the lower park, you'll find the medium to large jumps.
Purchase a full day pass, or choose a half which lets you ski from noon time till 4pm. You can purchase adult, youth, and child passes, though children under 6, and seniors over 65, are invited to ski for free. There are also military, AAA, and group (20+) discount rates available.
Tubing sessions are sold in 2 hour increment blocks. Snowshoeing, Backcountry, and snow camping tours on your own, with a group, or with a guide are available. Sign up at the tourist activities desk on the same day or in advance to secure a spot. Moonlight walks are available as well. Lessons are available in private or group settings for skiing, snowboarding, cross-country, or Telemark equipment. There are private or group lessons available with a program called "Guaranteed to Learn" ski or boarding lesson. Whichever you choose you're sure to have fun.
Be aware that the trails, with the exception of the backcountry, are geared for beginners and kids who want a leisurely day. The average intermediate skier will be down the hill in less than 5 minutes.
Lodging is available at the Ahawanee Lodge which boasts stone hearths, wood beamed ceilings, and 99 hotel rooms, or 24 private cottages, to rent. Or stay at the Yosemite Lodge which has hotel rooms, canvas tents, or cabins to choose from. For nightlife, all lodging includes a restaurant and bar for a relaxed atmosphere, or you can head back into Fresno for a big city experience. Either way, Badger Pass is a gem hidden in the forest.
Getting here is no problem. A free shuttle bus is offered from Curry Village, Ahwahnee Lodge and Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. Ask the front desk for information on how to get picked up. Note that public transportation does not run at night, so you will want to bring your car if you plan on an all day excursion.
