Class 5 fitness is a relatively small indoor rock climbing facility with a strong local following. The place also has fitness facilities. That is just about all we can tell you, but it is a worthwhile stop on your way east of Sonora, heading into the Sierras or to Lake Tahoe. And we really want to write about is outdoor rock climbing in the Sierra Nevada range, so after some practice at Class 5, head east and up. If you are heading to Yosemite, expect an experience very different from indoor rock gyms. You will be grabbing onto cracks in the granite rather than nicely-spaced handholds. There are also some very good bouldering routes in Yosemite, Bear in mind that the few easier routes at Yosemite can be pretty crowded, and you might find better beginner options elsewhere in the Sierras.

So, lets discuss rock climbing around Lake Tahoe. Crags around South Lake Tahoe are less crowded and some routes are easier, some rated 5.4, 5.5 and 5.6. Knapsack Crack is often suggested for those working there way up to the more strenuous routes. Note that the climbing season pretty much starts around the end of April when the snow has melted and the rocks are dry. By July, it is simply too hot to climb many of the non-shaded routes.

Please note that this is not to be confused with Sonora Sports and Fitness Center on Mono Way in Sonora. That facility is quite big, but there are currently no indoor rock climbing facilities there.
