Our Nature Nut Says:

Visit the most frequently climbed peak in the Sierra Nevadas! Enjoy solitude and pristine nature in the wilderness of Mount Whitney.

At an elevation of 14,505 feet, Mount Whitney is the highest point in the contiguous United States and lies within both the John Muir and Sequoia National Park Wilderness. Visitors here usually choose to hike the most popular route to the summit of Mt. Whitney; the main Mount Whitney trail. The hike is about 22 miles roundtrip, with an elevation gain of 6,100 ft. Climbers should check out the steep eastern side of the mountain, which offers a variety of climbing challenges. Whatever you choose, be sure to leave no trace of waste while you enjoy the magnificent nature here and always seek a valid permit to enjoy the safest excursion into the Mount Whitney area.

The town of Lone Pine, California, is the gateway to Mt. Whitney and Cottonwood Lakes. It is located on US 395 on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas, about 207 miles north of Los Angeles and 260 miles south of Reno, Nevada.
