Devils Postpile is a rare geological phenomenon created by lava flow hundreds of thousands of years ago. The site preserves the 101-foot columns of the exceptional columnar basalt that make up the Devils Postpile formation, Soda Springs Meadow, and the dazzling nearby Rainbow Falls.
The park is home to brightly-flowered meadows and an abundance of wildlife great and small, including large colonies of Belding ground squirrels, pacific tree frog, black bear, western rattlesnake, and Steller's Jays. Hiking, biking, camping, and cross-country skiing are just a few of the many activities permitted in the park.
From Devils Postpile National Monument - California:
The Devils Postpile formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry. Another wonder is in store just downstream from the Postpile at Rainbow Falls, once called "a gem unique and worthy of its name." When the sun is overhead, a bright rainbow highlights the spectacular falls.
