Golf Courses in Lake Tahoe, Reno, Yosemite, California Sierra Nevada

Things to do / Travel Guide

Much of the Sierra Nevada region is thought of as beautiful wilderness, and golf courses sporting names like Coyote Moon, Darkhorse, and Saddle Creek encourage that perception. Still, you may be asking yourself, what's the reality - at least when it comes to playing a round of golf? Will I be lost in an uncharted wilderness, or are the courses in this area actually oases of civilized play? Here are the facts:

A short distance outside Reno, Nevada, is Coyote Moon, which, despite the rustic implications behind its name, provides a first rate, luxury golf experience. You'll be awed by the scenery that includes regal pines on rolling hills and fields of wildflowers.

Another course that takes advantage of the natural beauty of the landscape is Darkhorse. With elevation changes following the natural contours of the land, you'll play through and around meadows, hillsides, and wetlands. Scenes of great beauty often double as hazards on this course that is stunning to both play and behold.

Get ready to take out your wallet if you're going to play Edgewood Tahoe, where scenic views of the lake's southern shore don't come cheap. Fortunately, this George Fazio-designed course is worth the price, as Golf Digest has called it one of “America's Top Golf Courses.” The course is also host to a yearly celebrity tournament.

Saddle Creek Golf Club looks down on the central valley fog belt and up at the snow-peaked Sierras, so you'll never be wanting for thrilling vistas along the wide, friendly fairways. However, don't get lulled by the surrounding beauty, or you'll end up in one of the many sand bunkers, where the view isn't quite so nice.
