Things to do / Travel Guide
One of the two forests in the continental U.S. that border the Pacific Ocean, Siuslaw National Forest encompasses one of the most productive and diverse landscapes in the world and is an Oregon "must-see".
Siuslaw National Forest contains more than 620,000 acres of temperate rain forest, and a relatively young Douglas-fir forest with a cultural history which makes it unique among all other national forests. The Douglas-firs cover much of the forest as the result of catastrophic forest fires in the late 1800s and early 1900s which created large open areas of ideal habitat for sun-dependent trees. Today, the thick, tall fir, along with western hemlock and Sitka spruce forests are laced with miles of rivers and streams, and contrast sharply with miles of open sand dunes, beaches, and freshwater lakes.
Visitors to Siuslaw National Forest can enjoy berry picking, fishing, wildlife viewing and hiking, or attend activities such as guided walks, classes and exhibits. The Cape Perpetuo Scenic Area and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area are the main scenic attractions on the Coast, and the inland area of the forest includes three wilderness areas, offering additional scenic and recreational opportunities to forest visitors., Everyone will enjoy the picnic areas, over 10 miles of hiking trails and small seasonal campground. And if history is your thing, the Cape Perpetuo Interpretive Center is perfect for learning about the cultural and natural history of the central Oregon Coast. T
The Siuslaw National Forest is located in the coast mountain range of Oregon, bordering the Pacific Ocean. It stretches along the coast from Tillamook to Coos Bay, and inland to Corvallis.
