Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area - Oregon

Things to do / Travel Guide

Our Nature Nut Says:

Stretching 40 miles along the Oregon Coast from Florence to Coos Bay, the dunes at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area contains the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. This unique area of windswept sand, the result of millions of years of wind, sun and rain erosion on the Oregon Coast, attracts hikers, bird watchers, photographers, off-highway vehicles and sandboard enthusiasts. Although it is primarily the soft dunes that bring the crowds to Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, the other natural features in the region, such as forests, marshy estuaries and lakes, make a great backdrop for camping, hiking, caneoing and horseback riding.

The ecological diversity found in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area creates an ideal sanctuary for many types of wildlife, especially rare birds, such as endangered shorebirds, osprey, egret, river otters and bald eagles.

In addition to some of the state's finest beach areas, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area contains numerous campgrounds, boat launch sites and picnicking areas for the whole family to enjoy. Nearly the entire district can be accessed from Highway 101.
