Remember the famous explorers who crossed the North American continent! The Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is made up of 12 sites on a 40 mile stretch of the Pacific coast from Long Beach, Washington to Cannon Beach, Oregon! Here you will explore a site dedicated those who explored our country!
The Lewis and Clark National Historical Park preserves sites associated with the arrival and winter encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the lower Columbia River area in the winter of 1805-1806. Visitors to the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park will see everything from Clark's Dismal Nitch, where the explorers got their first view of the beautiful Pacific ocean, to Station Camp, the historic location of the vote that would determine where the expedition would travel to during the winter months, to Cape Disappointment, the furthest point westward that Lewis and Clark reached. Other park sites include Fort Columbia State Park, Oregon's Fort Stevens State Park, Sunset Beach State Recreation Area, and Ecola State Park. Visitors to this massive park can start at Fort Clatsop or the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment. Stop by Fort Clatsop during the summer months and enjoy costumed programs that highlight some of the adventures of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Visitors looking for excitement can hike the Fort to Sea Trail, which winds its way through woods to Sunset Beach on the Pacific Ocean or kayak or paddle the Lewis and Clark River Trail for 1.5 miles along the river. Finally, the Lewis and Clark Columbia River Water Trail, a 146-mile stretch of water that follows the explorers' route on the Lower Columbia River from Bonneville Dam to the Pacific Ocean, is a unique piece of this park and gives modern day adventurers a true a taste of the times!
The Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is easy to get to! Most of the sites are located near US 101, on a 40 mile stretch of land, so be prepared to spend anywhere from one hour to a few days exploring the Historic Park commemorating some of America's greatest explorers!
