Oregon Coast Outdoor Recreation
If you liked the area around the Pacific Coast Highway in California, you will that the Oregon Coast has much to offer, as well. Possibly more and certainly less crowded. In you are interested in world-class coastal views – try the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor between Brookings, just north of the California, to Port Orford. All beaches along the entire 400 mile length of the Oregon Coast have public access and are excellent for wildlife viewing, beachcombing and hiking. The Oregon Coast Trail spans the entire length of the coast, from Washington State to the California border. Much of the trail is on undeveloped beachfront, usually quite accessible from the main highway and the towns along the Oregon Coast. The truly adventurous can bike the Oregon Coast. The trail is mainly along the roads, which are usually not very crowded, but there is a lot of elevation change. 16,000 feet to be exact.
Oregon Coast Outdoor Sports
The Rogue River in the southern end of the Oregon Coast offers varied outdoor sports opportunities. On the river, it is the jetboat trips that are most popular, going more then 50 miles upstream deep into the Rogue Wilderness. Fishing is a year-round sport in the Rogue River – think steelhead and salmon.
Further north, at Bandon, Oregon, south of Coos Bay are two of the top rated golf courses in the United States – Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes. This is outdoor recreation Scottish-style.
Outdoor Recreation in the Oregon Dunes
Hikers in the Oregon Dunes, between Florence and Coos Bay and Florence will find a unique wilderness area of miles of dunes, some 500 feet high. Certain areas are marked off for ATV access and they are prohibited in other areas. There are some challenging hikes in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area that require following poles place in the sand and a compass for when you feel that you have gotten lost in the middle of the Sahara.
