Things to do / Travel Guide

Driving to the Oregon Coast

Visiting the Oregon Coast pretty much requires a car, so lets focus on where the car is coming from. Tourists landing in Portland can head straight to the Oregon Coast on US-26. The 80 mile drive takes about an hour and a half. South of Portland, numerous state roads connect I-5 with the coast at Salem, near Corvallis and Eugene.

Travelers coming from Seattle head south on I-5, cross the Columbia River into Oregon at Kelso, Washington and then continue to the coast to Astoria, Oregon. A more scenic route exits I-5 at Olympia, Washington and heads west to US-101 in Washington State for the remaining 77 miles to Astoria.

Travelers coming from California are in for one of the best driving experiences in the country if they head all the way up the Northern California coast from the San Francisco Bay area. Head north out of San Francisco on the Pacific Coast Highway, Route 1, which joins US-101 for the drive through redwood country and reaches Oregon at Brookings.

Further north, Newport is served by SeaPort Airlines twice a day. The flight from Newport Municipal Airport (ONP) itself is about as close as most people will get to flying a corporate plane.
