Oregon Coast Family Vacations
The 400 mile length of the Oregon Coast may be a bit much for family friendly travel, so pick a spot or two and you have the makings of a great family vacation. All the Oregon Coast beaches have public access and kids interested in wildlife will find much of interest along the coast, from the various creatures in the tidepools to the sea lions and with some luck, whale-watching. Beachcombing for the flotsam and jetsam that has washed up from the Pacific Ocean or washed down from deep in the Oregon forests.
A more traditional attraction, always popular with families is the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. Keiko used to live here and many of the Free Willy scenes were shot further north in Astoria, Oregon.
Family Travel in the Oregon Dunes
The central Oregon Coast, between Coos Bay and Florence is home to one of the largest systems of ocean front dunes in the world. In this wilderness area, “Oregon's Sahara”, families can enjoy short hikes into the dunes or much longer excursions. The sands are constantly shifting with only poles marking the trail. As in the Sahara, bring a compass. One suggested point of access to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is at Umpqua Dunes near Lakeside. Bear on mind that some of the dunes allow ATV (All-terrain vehicle) access.
