Our Zoo and Aquarium Expert Says:

Consisting of 13 acres on a high bluff on the western bank of the Willamette River, Elk Rock Gardens was once a private garden, that was donated to the local Episcopal bishop of Oregon on the condition that it be open to the public. Today, Elk Rock Gardens boasts 6 acres of English-style gardens. They are widely known for their many varieties of magnolias, as well as for outstanding examples of many other native and exotic plants. The mature gardens are at their best through the spring and early summer, and there's an excellent view of Mount Hood from the grounds. With over 35 magnolia trees, giant sequoias, Spanish firs and Oregon oaks, as well as great walking trails and a fishing pond, Elk Rock Gardens is a delightful way to spend an afternoon immersed in nature's beauty.

Reaching the Elk Rock Gardens at Bishop's Close is easy. At the intersection of State Route 43 and Military Road, approximately two miles north of Lake Oswego, and two miles south of the Sellwood Bridge, turn east toward the river and then immediately south onto Military Lane which dead ends at the entrance to the property, a distance of approximately two city blocks.
