Our Sports Superfan Says:

A local favorite, which may see its time end soon, Portland Meadows race track has been attracting Oregonians and others to come and bet on the ponies since 1946. With an October to March racing season, this track is the biggest in the state, and an integral part of the general west coast horse racing world.

Major races are held on Sunday or Monday, but there is live racing throughout the week, with the exception of Tuesday. There is also a golf course on site, so fans can have another diversion. The track was completely rebuilt in 1971 after a fire, was refurbished again in 2001, and improved in 2003.

Many famous jockeys have raced here, including Gary Stevens and Bill Shoemaker, giving the track some historical cache despite its low profile. However, the track's future is in doubt. The Canadian owners of Portland Meadows have said that running live races may be too much of a money-losing enterprise for them to continue. While there will be racing in 2008, there are no guarantees after that.

Portland Meadows race track is located in the northwest corner of downtown Portland, adjacent to the Columbia Edgewater Country Club.
