Some people come just for the beautiful historic lodge built in the 1930 and used in the movie "The Shining." Then there are those who come to enjoy the varied terrain offered by the three nearby ski areas: Timeberline, Mt. Hood Meadows, and Mt. Hood SkiBowl. Still others come to experience the wonders of summer skiing and riding. The views are fabulous from the lodge, which is built in the middle of the mountain. This location can have its downside of course, especially if you finish your day after the last lift stops running because you'll be forced to walk back up the hill. Located just an hour from Portland makes it an attractive venue for many locals to come up for a few runs beneath the moon before enjoying dinner at the lodge. Ninety days of summer skiing and riding....! That alone is a good reason to make Timberline the destination for next summer's vacation.
