Known for its pristine dry powder and the best skiing and riding in the West, Mt. Bachelor long ago earned its status as the #5 resort in North America for skiing acreage, rolling in at an impressive 3,700 acres (1,600 groomed daily) of trails and terrain in which to play away the day! Located in the high desert of the Central Cascades mountain range, 22 miles southwest of Bend, Oregon, Mt. Bachelor receives an impressive 370+ inches of snow a season, making their resort the place to be when the snow flies! Additionally, with a vertical drop of 3,365 feet, riders will have a hard time justifying going anywhere other than Mt. Bachelor this winter.
Open from 9am to 4pm weekdays, and from 8am on weekends and holidays, the resort is active from Thanksgiving through to mid-May. Skiers and snowboarders have ample time to traverse and carve into Mt. Bachelors 71 trails. These are accessed by 10 chairlifts, including 7 express quad chairs, to maximize skiing time and minimize the time spent waiting in line. There are also over a dozen cross-country trails spread out over 56km of machine groomed terrain that is track-set nightly. Mt. Bachelor's longest cruising trail comes in at a mile and a half , so you can spend awhile making the kind of GS turns of which dreams are made.
Mt. Bachelors has not 1 or 2, but an amazing 4 choices of terrain parks for those on snowboards, broken down according to ability levels and riding features. "Slopestyle" has large features for advanced to professional riders with its tables and step up and downs that rise an impressive 50-60 feet in the air! The "Air Chamber" boasts medium to large features, suitable the intermediate to professional rider. Spanning a continuous mile long, and 850 vertical feet, this park is constantly busy. The "iPark" is a great medium sized park for improving skills, and "Sunshine" is where to ride when just getting started as you'll feel more comfortable taking your first snowboarding steps on its ride-on boxes and mini-rollers.
Mt. Bachelor's 400 foot long superpipe and 18 1/2 foot high walls is home to the US Snowboard Grand Prix and was used as the setting for the 2006 US Olympic Qualifier. With 4 parkcat operators, a handcrew that deals solely with the parks, and a dedicated park manager, Mt. Bachelor's is literally one of the best snowboarding and free riding areas you could come to this season!
Lessons are given all day long for both children and adults in private or group settings. Mt. Bachelor offers a free 2 hour beginner's workshop to purchasers of a full price teen or adult ticket for the day. There are also intermediate and advanced rider workshops available. Check out the Burton Learn-to-Ride center, or the signature kid's program for 3 1/2 to 12 year olds that includes a lift ticket, lesson and boxed lunch. Four onsite lodges host the many diverse bars and restaurants available for all après-ski action. Check out "Carver's" and "The Rock" for specialty micro-brews and drink specials, as well as for delicious food options such as imported cheeses, hand tossed pizzas, pig wings (you heard me right), sandwich bars, and bratwurst. Or head into the nearby town of Bend, just 10 minutes away, for over thirty-six bars, wineries, brewing companies, and cabarets. Choose from fine or casual dining and slow-cooked BBQ, straight on down to branches of the national fast food restaurant chains prevalent all over the United States.
Mt. Bachelor also has its own resort on site that offers a variety of lodgings from one bedroom suites to chalets; some with private hot tubs and sun-decks. Guests also enjoy free lift tickets when they come for a minimum two night stay, as well as complimentary passes to the Athletic Club in Bend. Bend and the neighboring town of Sun River also offers lodgings ranging from private home rentals to charming upscale inns. When the night comes in, and the temperature drops, check out Bend's 5 movie theaters, funky art galleries, and the live music in the many saloons and pubs. If you're there with the family, check out the bowling alley for the children.
