Mount Hood Skibowl is North America's largest night skiing facility. Its proximity to Portland makes it a favorite for after work/school skiing and boarding with the locals, as the drive from door to door is a total of 90 minutes.
Located in the southern cascades, on the south side of Mount Hood, Mount Hood Skibowl has over 200 acres of skiable terrain, covered with 34 runs that remain open weekdays until 10:00pm, and until 11:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Not only is the night skiing great, but for those hitting up the slopes during the day the views are unforgettable. The Palmer Snowfield can be seen to the north, and in the distance the peaks of Mount Saint Helen and Mount Rainier are visible from atop Tom Dick Peak. On the other side, the southern views include Mount Bachelor and the Three Sisters. In addition to groomed tracks on the upper mountain, Mount Hood also has 300 acres of ungroomed outback terrain for heli and cat skiing.
For boarders, the terrain park, located on Lower Surprise, has a halfpipe as well as hips, lips, rollers, and spines. The mountain also has a boarder cross course, just off the Cascade chair. For non-skiers, or skiers who just need a little break, Mount Hood is the proud owner of some of the best snowtubing in Oregon. The resort's Adventure Park has horse drawn sleigh rides, mini snowmobiles for kids, and a 2 story heated play zone, giving a break to kids and parents alike.
Although it has been recently modernized, Skibowl maintains its relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. If you're here on a ski vacation, try to get in as much skiing possible during the day, as the local crowds start to stream in around twilight time, packing the lodge and the lift lines.
The food is another focal point here. People make the drive all the way from Portland just to have a midday bite. On slope choices include a rustic restaurant with a cozy fire and some wonderful mulled wine to warm your toes in the midday sun. Make sure to try out a microbrew on the mountain as well. With a great view, one should also try to the gourmet chef restaurant and lounge, serving up the goods of local culinary wonder chef Slava Kropacek. Live music is also available for some après-ski down time.
Skibowl has an array of by the slope and off the slope accommodation options. With a resort across the road, rustic chalets with self-catering kitchens, and a lodge on Collins Lake with a heated swimming pool, hot tub, and more great views. Additional lodging options are available in the nearby mountain village of Government Camp.
From Mount Hood Skibowl Resort - Government Camp, Oregon:
Our Upper Bowl gives you 800 feet of pure vertical. The ride up is only 4 minutes and 30 seconds. If you are up to it, you could literally get 5000 vertical per hour. I am talking PURE VERTICAL. Try finding that anywhere else in Oregon!
